چکیده
2 Forest Advisor, University of California, Cooperative Extension, Eureka, California Abstract: Data on riparian community composition and environmental conditions were collected on over 20 streams in the Sierra Nevada as part of hydropower licensing studies. Over 1,000 samples were analyzed using two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN), to determine riparian dominance types. Ordination techniques were applied to evaluate associations between environmental conditions and community characteristics. Results indicate that at least 15 communities are found in riparian settings at altitudes ranging from 300 to 3000 m on eastern and western slopes of the Sierra Nevada. These communities are arranged in the landscape in apparent response to climatic and geomorphic gradients.

Mining and Environmental Degradation: a Gift Brings Grief Scenario for Mining Communities in Sierra Leone
Sierra Leone is blessed with abundant natural resources but yet prone to environmental degradation due to the mining operations. Most often, the mining communities are faced with social tensions, as a result of the possible trade-off between the expected employment impact and the cost of mining operations to the environment. Over the past decades, the contribution of the mining sector to the de...
متن کاملPatterns of Breeding Songbird Diversity and Occurrence in Riparian Habitats of the Eastern Sierra Nevada
We determined several vegetation and environmental features that predicted breeding bird species diversity and focal species occurrence in riparian habitats across three watersheds of the eastern Sierra Nevada bioregion, California. Conducting point counts and associated vegetation assessments at 480 individual riparian points between 1998 and 2000 permitted us to investigate bird and habitat r...
متن کاملNitrogen content of Letharia vulpina tissue from forests of the Sierra Nevada, California: geographic patterns and relationships to ammonia estimates and climate.
Nitrogen (N) pollution is a growing concern in forests of the greater Sierra Nevada, which lie downwind of the highly populated and agricultural Central Valley. Nitrogen content of Letharia vulpina tissue was analyzed from 38 sites using total Kjeldahl analysis to provide a preliminary assessment of N deposition patterns. Collections were co-located with plots where epiphytic macrolichen commun...
متن کاملEffects of Conifers on Aspen-breeding Bird Communities in the Sierra Nevada
We examined bird-habitat relationships within and across a range of aspen habitats in four major watersheds in the eastern Sierra Nevada mountains of California and Nevada to identify habitat features of importance to aspen-breeding birds. Using point counts and vegetation assessments from 462 individual stations between 2001 and 2003 allowed us to investigate important habitat features at wate...
متن کاملThe Status and Conservation of Mesocarnivores in the Sierra Nevada
Carnivores play important roles in structuring communities, and their populations are useful indicators of ecosystem condition (Wennergren and others 1995, Buskirk 1999, Crooks and Soulé 1999, Terborgh and others 2001). As many as 4 of 20 native mammalian carnivore species have been extirpated from the southern Cascade Mountains and Sierra Nevada, with unmeasured effects on ecological communiti...
